This was used for high-profile - often royal - prisoners from the 12th to the 15th century. To enter the dungeon in 1990, one had to sneak through the grounds of Kazasker Ivaz Efendi Camii, pull a heavy iron grate away from its fixings and squeeze underneath, then stumble through dark, dusty tunnels until you got to what you see in this picture.
