Gümüşhane

In summer 1994, I set myself the task of driving from Erzurum, via Bayburt and Gümüşhane, to Trabzon. Here I would pick up the rest of the participants in the Kaçkar Dağı expedition ^[1]. It looked like a manageable distance on the map but the road through Gümüşhane was what my brother would call a ‘driver’s road’. This meant hairpin bends and adrenaline. It seemed like an immense distance. In order to get to Trabzon airport in time, I had to motor through without stopping, except for some petrol and a coke on the outskirts of the city of Gümüşhane.
