Istanbul: Byzantine Churches and the Fragmenting Patriarchate

overall12

This is an attempt to map and photograph every remaining Byzantine church in Istanbul, no matter how fragmentary. I also look at the amazing proliferation of Christian variety that has stemmed from the original Ecumenical patriarchate of Constantinople. There are some inevitable inaccuracies here. Please let me know if you find some.

Here is the explanation [1] and introduction (with references [2]).

There are two ways of finding a particular church:

1. Find it in the index [3]. Most churches appear under a number of different names.

2. Click the appropriate area on the list below (as indicated by the map).

Ayvansaray/Balat/Fener [4]

Kocamustafapaşa, Yenikapı and Silivrikapı [5]

Sultanahmet/Sarayburnu [6]

Edirnekapı/Karagümrük/Fethiye [7]

Millet/Vatan Caddesi [8]

Süleymaniye/Vezneciler/Aksaray [9]

Fatih/Zeyrek/Unkapanı [10]

Samatya [11]

Pera/Galata [12]

Outer Istanbul [13]

Outside Istanbul [14]

I would like to thank you for your outstanding documentation on Byzantine churches and monasteries, which recently allowed for a great (occasionally frustrating) weekend of tramping around in Trakya looking for kaya kiliseleri. In Istanbul, too, I lived under the all too naive illusion that I had detected all the Byzantine ecclesiastical brickwork there is to be found, until I came across your blog. Thanks for sharing!
