Climb Sydney Harbour Bridge at night

I was drunk at the time. I lived in Sydney in 1989 in a band house and my behaviour was not always wise.

One night (I think I had just finished a shift at the pizza shop) the drummer and I decided to go and see Luna Park but it had been closed down for safety reasons.

Looking around for something to do, I noticed the steel-arch bridge looming over us. I climbed over a spiked steel gate and found that I could go up the bottom part of the arch. I did this until I popped up on the roadway level. Another annoying clamber over a spiky thing (tight gap between the spikes and the top of the gateway frame) and I was on the inner arch of the bridge. It was an easy (but surprisingly long) climb up to the top of the arch. The view from mid-arch was… woo. Lucky I’d had the alcohol. I think getting out of the gate back onto the roadway was the hardest bit of the climb. I imagine that this would be impossible now.

When I got back to the ground, the drummer had learned some new swear words.

Sorry. No pictures. I didn’t have a camera with me.
